Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Hilton Head 2010 May 050When my husband, David, retired four years ago, we moved from Ohio to beautiful Hilton Head Island. We’d been coming here for years with friends and had fallen in love with the place.

If you’re ever undecided on where to spend your vacation, Hilton Head has it all! It offers everything for a family, or for a couple looking for a romantic getaway, or just a bunch of friends wanting to get together. There are numerous hotels, or you could rent a condo or a home in one of the many gated communities known as plantations.

Bike paths are everywhere. You can take a leisurely ride beneath the live oaks past lagoons where you might see an alligator, a great blue heron, or an anhinga with its wings spread to dry. There are beautifully manicured golf courses, long expanses of beach, any type of restaurant you can think of,  horseback riding, tennis, and for the kids there’s also miniature golf and kid’s concerts.

Also hang-gliding and zip-lining. Did I mention shopping? Oh, boy, look out! My friends and I did real damage to our credit cards the last time they were visiting.

South Beach in Sea Pines is the home of the famous Salty Dog restaurant and T-shirt shop. Harbor Town has the marina, lighthouse, restaurants – and did I mention shopping? You can rent jet skis, kayaks, and catamarans. You can go on a guided fishing excursion or a dolphin watch ride.

Hilton Head is only about an hour from Savannah and Beaufort, two other great places to visit. And it’s a straight shot off beautiful I-95 so you can get here from anywhere. We even have our own little airport. Or arrive on your own boat on the Intercoastal Waterway.

I’ve always loved the ocean and still can’t believe I’m fortunate enough to be living within a few minutes walk to the beach.

  1. Man, this looks like the perfect place for a writer’s retreat! Mary Marvella and I were talking about it a while back. Sure would love to have a retreat at the beach. Now that we’ve found the spot, we just need to find the writers who want to go!

Hilton Head Island is one of my favorite spots. My husband and I are near, Charlotte, NC, which is only about a four hour drive. Enjoy!
